Cellular Nutrition for True Health
Cellular nutrition was a foreign concept to Sam. He thought he was meeting his nutritional needs by eating three meals a day, trying to get some vegetables and fruits in. Then he started developing allergies. First, they were seasonal occurring in the spring, then his symptoms continued throughout the year. His energy plummeted, his nose ran, and sneezing was a constant companion. He tried various remedies including allergy shots and drugs with no improvement. Then, during a visit with a nutritional medicine physician he found out his allergies were likely a result of underlying inflammation in his body caused by oxidative stress. His doctor looked concerned as he said, “This is the same type of inflammation implicated in cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and other degenerative diseases.”
His doctor started him on supplements rich in antioxidants targeted to provide optimal cellular nutrition… the antidote to oxidative stress! Sam started to notice improvements within a month of taking the supplements. Now, after 6 months his allergy symptoms are all but gone. Sam now sees his allergies as a wake up call to make changes in his life. He now gets regular exercise, eats more fruits and vegetables, and takes nutritional supplements. He sleeps better, has more energy, and feels great! Ray Strand, MD, noted expert in nutritional medicine, says, “In my clinical experience, almost all allergies will improve [with optimal cellular nutrition supplements]. Some will improve dramatically and some will improve moderately… I tell my patients if they start their aggressive nutritional supplement program in the fall they will be better in the spring. If they start in the spring, they will be better in the fall.”
Optimal cellular nutrition doesn’t just help allergies… It can save your life!
The “root” cause of over 70 chronic degenerative diseases is “oxidative stress,” according to Strand’s review of reports found in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, British Lancet, and Annuals of Internal Medicine. These are the killer and life sapping diseases, like heart disease, cancer, arthritis, strokes, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue and the list goes on.
What’s oxidative stress?
Oxidative stress results from excess free radicals. Andrew Weil, MD, explains that free radicals are a chemist’s term for unstable molecules capable of stripping electrons from other molecules in their effort to become stable. They occur naturally during metabolism, the process that turns food into energy by combining it with oxygen from the air you breathe. Free radicals become harmful when stress, environmental pollutants, or eating unhealthy foods like trans-fats increase their numbers. “When you produce more free radicals than you can manage, you create oxidative stress. Oxygen is essential for life itself; however, it is also inherently dangerous for our existence. The same process that causes a cut apple to turn brown or metal to rust also causes your body to rust inside,” Dr. Strand, informs.
You are not Defenseless Though
Antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, mixed carotenoids, selenium, and co-enzyme Q10 can neutralize free radicals. Dr. Strand says, “Balance is the key. You need to have enough antioxidants available to handle the number of free radicals produced. Then you are able to prevent oxidative stress from occurring.” Your body can make some of its own antioxidants and you can get them from foods such as fruits and vegetables. However, you can’t get enough from these sources alone. This is partly due to agricultural practices that deplete soils, green harvesting, lack of food freshness due to shipping and storage practices. According to nutritional experts such as Weil and Strand, you must supplement a
healthy diet
to get the cellular nutrition needed for true health.
Choose Your Nutritional Supplement Wisely
Speaking as someone who has learned the hard way by wasting lots of money, buying supplements of poor quality, and even overdosing on one type and being deficient in another… it’s important to be well-informed in choosing your supplement. To be frank, I knew the importance of cellular nutrition, but I haven’t felt comfortable recommending nutritional supplements until now. There just were too many confusing recommendations on isolated nutrients. Cellular nutrition requires a balanced blend of nutrients. I also didn’t know how to determine if the supplement itself was safe or of high quality. Nutritional supplement manufacturers only need to meet food quality standards. So, there’s no guarantee that the ingredients listed on the label are the same as those in the bottle. What’s more, a nutritional supplement study in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science found that more than half of the supplements tested did not disintegrate properly. That means even when taken, they weren’t available for the body.
How to Get Well-Informed
For help, I turned to the NutriSearch Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements, as it provides an independent, unbiased rating of over 1500 nutritional supplements available in the US and Canada. Their rating, based on the recommended daily nutritional intakes from 12 nutritional authorities, includes completeness, potency, availability to the body, and quality of manufacturing process along with other factors. This study rated each supplement with a score from 1-Star to 5-Stars, with “1” being the lowest and “5” being the highest. There were very few 5-Star supplements. Of those who did reach 5-Stars, some achieved the NutriSearch Gold Medal of Achievement, representing the “best of the best.” This award means they achieved the five-star rating and they demonstrated current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) compliance that has been verified by independent laboratory testing “what’s on the label is really in the bottle.” Three companies won this achievement: - USANA Health Sciences sold online or through associates.
- Creating Wellness Alliance sold through healthcare professionals at participating CWA-certified chiropractic clinics.
- Truestar Health sold through health and fitness centers located in Canada.
USANA health Sciences was the only company that also received the Editor’s Choice Award for going beyond the science-based criteria. They demonstrated excellence in quality and corporate citizenship by “providing the consumer with tangible assurance of quality, integrity, and leadership.” I finally found nutritional supplements I can recommend!
